9. Finding a pet bed

When looking for a bed for your pet it is important to know there are a variety of choices out there & they are not all alike. Pets can be like many people & have preference of things we like & things we are not fan of. Our pets are no different, some like a round bed, some like ones with sides all around or on 3 sides, some like flat ones & some with 2 ends turned up (currently the one my dogs are using while I am typing this). The size of your pets bed will vary on the size of your pet & whether he/she likes to curl up or likes to spread out. Some like a round shaped bed that encircles their body & they are in it, more than on it.

Some pets will share their bed with other pets in the house, so will need one they can both/all fit on. My dogs are medium to large,in size 50-55 lb range, but they lay touching each other. I don’t need a bed as big as 2 dogs who don’t want to touch when laying on the bed or if you have a large 100 lb dog.

My dog Echo has been the type of dog who likes to remove stuffing from anything that has it. He is starting to get better, but he took the stuffing out of approx. 5 -6 dog pets. His last birthday in May 2024, I got him a blowup dog bed (air mattress) & it is still in good shape. I thought we would use it for camping, but they wanted to sleep on my bed with me. A friend blessed us with the dog bed that her dog didn’t like, it was about 2 weeks ago & so far Echo has not tried to take the stuffing out of it. He will be 4 in May, so maybe he is growing out of the desire to do it, I hope so.

Some beds have removable covers, which allow you to unzip & remove the outside cover & wash it. Some have a solid foam inside (like a sofa cushion) & some have stuffing in them. If your dog sheds you may want to consider one close to their color so the fur isn’t so noticeable.

Be aware that your pet may not like every bed you like, give it some time & maybe change its location of the bed to interest your pet to check it out. Some will investigate & use it right away, while others may want to monitor it a while before they decide to use it. If your pet never likes it, you can always gift it to a friend or a rescue who I am sure would appreciate it.

Beds for ferrets are usually small cat beds or hammocks & should be fully washable, & washed at least weekly. For ferrets you should have several changes of bedding as accidents will happen, plus clean bedding helps keep the smell away.
