#162. #4 in series: Fun Ideas for Your Smart/Active Dog

Treat dispensing toys are a lot of fun for a lot of dogs. There are a variety of types, some are easier than others. Most of mine have quite a few teeth marks on them. Dogs like to use their noses & paws to knock them around so treats or food will fall out & they get to eat it.

To prevent dogs from becoming overweight or if your dog is a little pudgy already then these treat dispensers can be used to feed them their meals. They eat slower which is better & they use up calories working at getting the food out. You can put half or all of their kibble into the treat dispensing toy & let your dog roll it or knock it around allowing the food to fall out. If it is too easy, then you may want to try one that is harder to get food to fall out. I will show you a variety of ones I have. There are many available online or in local pet stores.

The one above has different levels & it has to fall to the bottom to come out, takes a little time, but not for strong chews as they could break it.

As you can tell the above Kong Wobbler is a favorite of my dogs, lots of teeth marks. It comes apart, you put in treats & they knock it around like a weeble (a kids toy from many years ago) & the food/treats come out of the hole. This one gets knocked across the room & Echo tries to carry it upstairs, I prefer it stays in my unfinished basement, so not knocked into cabinets or baseboards. Be sure lid is on tight or it could come open too soon.

This toy has a rope with a knot on the inside & allows small amounts of treats to come out at a time, this one has seen better days as a dog chewed the rope on the outside as well.

Kongs that you can stuff & freeze are a lot of fun & can occupy a dog for hours. I recommend things like high quality canned food, pure canned pumpkin, frozen blueberries frozen peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, or other veggies your dogs like, not too much fruit as it a natural sugar. Dogs are lactose intolerant so dairy not recommended even though many dogs like it, their intestines really don’t.

I hope this has given you a few more ideas of things you can do to help keep your active &/or smart dog busy, especially on the raining cold days or when your life is extra busy & they don’t get as much walking/hiking or human attention.
