I decided on this topic after my coworkers dog got sprayed last week. She said she thought ‘I wonder if Debbie has blogged about this.’ I hadn’t, so thought I would, so if this happens to others they will have some options.
There are some suggestions of things to use like tomato juice, but after many people trying it for years it was proved it doesn’t work. I am glad my dogs have never had a direct hit/spray but getting the mist from a distance has happened. It stinks, but sure not as bad as a direct hit/spray & from what I understand it stings their eyes.
The first remedy I have used & it definitely helped a lot, but think I would have done one more thing that I’ll tell you about in this post. Recipe option A is:
- 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1-2 teaspoons liquid dish soap
- For larger pets add 1 quart warm water
Pour it slowly over the pet, working it into a lather (KEEP it away from their eyes). Allow to sit for 5 minutes. You can use a washcloth & wash the facial area if you are real careful & your pet is cooperating.
Use all the product mixture, do not try to save any left over & cap or store it, it can/will explode.
I read that some people added a small amount of Apple cider Vinegar to the mix before putting on the pet. The caution was to wait a few minutes before using it due to a chemical reaction that was not good to breath.
Recipe option B: Dilute Apple Cider Vinegar with water (equal amounts) & put in a spray bottle & apply. Caution: Do not spray near eyes.
Recipe Option C : Fresh Rosemary, bath, rinse, Brush Rosemary branches all over the pet. (Caution: Potential risk of seizures with a history of seizures).
Recipe Option D: gojo hand cleaner (my dad used this in his shop) I have never tried it on an animal, but found people said it worked).
Recipe Option E: Listerine (alcohol free) in a spray bottle & spray on pet (only applied from a wash cloth near the face).
Recipe Option F: Salt bath remedy: 1/2 cup shampoo per gallon of water, 1/4-1/2 cup salt per gallon. Put in an empty gallon-2 gallon jug, shake & let sit for 10 mins (or longer to make it stronger). Wet dog & apply saturating coat & skin, after 10 mins rinse.
Recipe Option G: Toothpaste, squeeze a tube into water, mix well & wet pet down, work though & let sit 5-10 mins. Rinse well. Caution: do NOT allow the pet to lick as many toothpastes can contain Xylitol which is dangerous for pets.
For the face: Undiluted plain White Vinegar-pour onto a clean sponge or cloth & wipe face. DON’T dilute or wipe it off. This is the thing I wish I had done, but honestly at that time I didn’t know about it.
If your dog rolls in something fishy smelling there is a remedy for that as well. Do this outside: Use a box of baking soda & shake it on the dog & rub it in & then let your dog shake off the excess.
